Level indicators is an easy way to measure water levels in tanks, sump pit monitoring, and detect leakages in storage spaces. Level indication systems are widely used both for small scale and industrial applications.
Basic components for level measurement include sensors (floats,
level sensors,
ultrasonic sensors, or pressure sensors), transceivers (transmitter at the tank for example, and a receiver/gateway at a central place), and actuators (can be an alarm/buzzer or a controller to do some function).
Incorporating wireless transmission in level indicator systems makes monitoring efficient as the data can be transmitted to an ideal location e.g., to cloud for 24/7 monitoring or to central office where an operator can monitor data or to a controller for automatic or controlled action.
See below possible ways to incorporate wireless solution:
- Cellular transmitters on tanks.
This can be invaluable for applications such as fuel monitoring for mobile trucks or any fluid tank in transit. Set up includes a suitable fluid sensor (ultrasonic or capacitive level sensors), and a wireless communication device (LTE-M or NB-IoT enabled).
See below sample overview of the connection flow.
Wireless level monitoring for mobile applications
- Fixed wireless transmissions
For fixed applications such as tanks at homes, or industrial tanks, Wi-Fi or 900MHz technologies, for example, can be used for transmission of data between transmitters and receivers/gateway as well as between gateways and actuators.
Transmitter at tanks send level information and receiver/gateway at a central location receives data for displaying/warning, automation or transmission to cloud. See below illustrations.

With the signal improvement using the 900MHz antenna, when running the cable from the radio to the antenna, you may face attenuation issues. You may want to use in-line 900MHz amplifiers (like the
12-101,
12-105, and
12-103 amplifiers) near the antenna in case of long cable runs to maintain a strong signal reaching the antenna.
