Vehicle Omni-Directional Antennas

Vehicle Omni-Directional Antennas

Vehicle antennas are usually applied for mobile solutions. For this reason, they are omnidirectional, portable, and ideally low-profile.

Outdoor omnidirectional antennas are preferred for mobile applications because you don’t have to point it to a specific tower.

There are three major advantages to omnidirectional for vehicle antenna applications:

  1. Easy installation
  2. It will amplify signal from different cell towers in multiple locations
  3. Good in areas where there is strong signal but are low-lying valleys

However, they also have some disadvantages when compared to Yagi and LPDA antennas:

  1. Coverage distance is limited compared to directional antennas
  2. Don’t give as much gain to your incoming signal as a directional antenna
  3. Susceptible to “signal noise” and can become overwhelmed in areas with extreme signal transmissions.
  4. Not ideal for rural areas where there is huge distance from the cell towers

Types of Vehicles antennas:

1. Magnet mount antennas:

Mounted magnetically to the frame of the vehicle.  Offers temporary solution for mounting antennas and can be rapidly deployed. They usually include a length of coax cable terminating in an, for example, FME or other connector type.

2. NMO Mount Antennas

This is mostly used for fleets and are permanently installed.
NMO mounts have a base you can permanently mount to your vehicle while still be able to change the antenna. You can either mount the base permanently by drilling       holes or you could use magnetically mounted NMOs.

NMO mounts can be:
  1. Through hole NMO mount
  2. Magnetic NMO mount
  3. Trunk lid NMO mount
  4. Mirror bracket NMO mount

Check out these NMO mounts.

3. Through hole Mount antennas:

Through hole mounts require drilling holes. The antenna cables and any other components run through the hole and are therefore, shielded from environmental exposure.

Alternate mounts like pole mounts with L-brackets is possible for fabricated pole mounts RVs, trucks or vans.
