N+1 Redundancy in DC Power Supply Systems using ICT100-RIM Module

N+1 Redundancy in DC Power Supply Systems using ICT100-RIM Module

What is N+1 Redundancy in DC Power Supply Systems?

Globally, the need for greater system availability has intensified significantly across virtually every industry, from banking, manufacturing, IT, Healthcare, and many others. System designers are thus required to guarantee an unprecedented level of equipment uptime. N+1 redundancy in power supply systems is a common practice used to ensure system reliability and minimize downtime in case of equipment failure.

Achieving N+1 Redundancy using ICT100-RIM

The module required to achieve N+1 redundancy in a power supply system will depend on the specific hardware being used. However, in general, power supply redundancy can be achieved by using multiple power supply units (PSUs) and a system that can automatically detect and switch to a backup PSU if the primary one fails. The ICT 100 Amp Redundant Isolation Module allows for a safe parallel connection of two DC power supplies or DC-DC converters to create an N+1 fault-tolerant redundant power system.

In the unlikely event where one of the power supplies experiences an output short to ground failure, the ICT Redundant Isolation Module instantly disconnects the non-functioning power source to prevent the system bus voltage from falling, and prevents large reverse peak currents, which could cause damage to the remaining power supply.

While N+1 redundancy can increase system reliability, it is not a substitute for proper maintenance and testing of the power supply system. Regular inspections and preventive maintenance can help identify potential issues before they cause a failure, which can further increase the system's uptime and reliability.
