Modbus Control Wirelessly

Modbus Control Wirelessly

Modbus Wirelessly

Modbus is a serial communication protocol on the application layer used to transmit data between electronic devices used in the industrial automation and control industry.

There are two major options:

  1. The TCP/IP which employs ethernet connection between master and slave. Sends data via packets.
  1. RTU uses serial connection (RS485 or RS232) between master and slave. Sends binary data (1 and 0)

Wireless Modbus uses TCP/IP model but instead of ethernet frames, it uses wireless protocols (802.11) for transmission between master/slave or Server/client.

How to implement wireless Modbus in HVAC controls

In old installations with wired RTU RS232/RS485, you could leverage wireless modbus for easy integration of new devices into the network or bypass technicalities or issues with the wired networks.

Most wireless modbus devices can use 900MHz (or 800MHz) ISM or 2.4GHz ISM and also employ mesh technologies for multipath networks communication between the master and the slaves.

You could use a device like the lumen radio’s wireless modbus to turn a wired modbus network of outdoor or indoor units to a wireless mesh network for either industrial or residential applications.
