Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X)

Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) is a wireless communications technology that connects vehicles to everything including but not limited to other vehicles, pedestrians, roadside infrastructure, and networks. It promotes autonomous and safe driving.

There are different interaction modes in V2X communication:
  1. V2V: This relates to the transfer of data between vehicles.
  2. V2P: This is the exchange of data between the car and pedestrians.
  3. V2N: This is when a vehicle accesses the network for cloud-based services.
  4. V2I: This is the exchange of data between a car and equipment installed alongside roads, generally called a 'roadside unit' (RSU). V2I can be typically used to broadcast traffic conditions and emergency information to drivers.

Cellular-V2X is 3GPP-based global vehicle wireless communication technology that evolves from 4G and 5G. It includes LTE-V2X and 5G-V2X.  Cellular equipment used in C-V2X includes the Road Side Units (RSU) and vehicle on-board units (OBU).

There are two communication interfaces used in C-V2X communications:

PC5 Comm interface
Road side units (RSUs) and vehicle on-board units (OBUs) can use PC5 interfaces for a short distance direct communication interface between the vehicles OBUs and the RSUs as well as other components of V2X.

Uu Comm interface
RSUs and OBUs can also use Uu for high-speed long-distance communication between the V2X terminals (RSUs OBUs) and base stations.
