5G NR Developments

5G is growing and its applications are showing up in various fields. A recent announcement by Halo on using T-Mobile’s 5G network in its driverless car project indicates the niche 5G is cutting for itself. See below T-Mobile 5G coverage partly. Full map here.

Halo is using multiple T-Mobile 5G modems in their full electric car to connect to T-Mobile’s 5G network which is then controlled with their in-house drivers through their RemotePilot Technology. The reason 5G is essential for this project is because of the low latency and high bandwidth it offers which is required to handle all the cameras and integration with the car through the network. At the moment, this project uses the mid-band 2.5 GHz spectrum.

With these developments, 5G is seeing enormous growth, both in the sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrums with more and more 5G devices being released by various vendors.

Here are some of the 5G devices both mobile and fixed wireless access devices in the market today (Most are backward compatible with 4G LTE especially due to 5G NR NSA).

IoT projects are also on the rise. Monitoring and control of resources such as sensors and actuators which in turn are connected to 5G edge devices is another major application of 5G.

Fixed Wireless Access for IoT Devices

It is also possible to improve 5G coverage for FWA with 5G external antennas especially in the sub-6 GHz spectrum and other mid-band spectrums. For more information on 5G bands, see this page. You can also use these ready device-specific antenna kits for your device with external antenna ports in case you facing coverage issues.
